Using Hyperion Essbase to Manage Risk and Maintain Compliance in an Energy Trading Business

Chris Chase, President, The Barkin’ Bean
Lisa Tiffin, Energy Applications Services Manager, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association

For more than 50 years, Tri-State Generation and Transmission has operated, as a non-profit, wholesale electric power supplier owned by the electric cooperatives that it serves. Tri-State supplies energy to people in small towns and rural communities in the West by generating and transmitting electricity to its member systems throughout a 250,000 square-mile territory across Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming. As part of its business, Tri-State maintains an energy trading operation, which has a number of constraints defined by the company’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC). These constraints, involving volume and cost variances and cost exposures, must be tracked and reviewed in order to maintain internal audit compliance. The company’s current combination of Oracle Financials and a Ventyx Schedule Management system does not provide a seamless or integrated solution to these type of Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) activities, particularly related to the management and tracking of current energy trading activities and trading exposure against the RAC constraints. This paper and presentation will explain how Hyperion Essbase was used to quickly create an interim solution — in less than 90 days — that automates both the process of loading system data from several enterprise applications, as well as the process of tracking and reporting the current energy trading activities and exposure against the RAC constraints using a dynamic time horizon to report on the future week’s potential exposure.

The presentation will conclude with an overview of Eaton Vance’s future plans for leveraging OBIEE as the sole enterprise-wide reporting and analytics tool in the organization, integrating both sales and assets under management (AUM) metrics and metadata.

The Office of the CFO

Achieving a Common Goal: Creating an Oracle EPM Center of Excellence

Steve Cioffi, Pepsi
Edward Roske, CEO, interRel Consulting

At most companies, there is Hyperion products spread throughout various departments. Finance may control Hyperion Financial Management, the budgeting department owns Hyperion Planning, and IT controls Essbase. In many cases, several different departments all have expertise in the same product (Essbase, commonly). Wouldn’t it be better to bring all of these groups together under one common umbrella that can share best practices, dimensions, data, and most importantly, experience?

An Oracle EPM (or Hyperion) Center of Excellence is within your reach, and in this one hour presentation, you will learn the steps to begin creating one. What areas should come together first? Do I hire new people or bring my existing ones under own common group? How do I span excellence around the globe? Can I take different Hyperion applications and cubes and give them common hierarchies? Are there recommended ways to share data between all of my products? Who should lead this group?

Once you’ve implemented an Oracle EPM, BI, or Hyperion center, you’ll find that your administrative costs go down, maintenance is simplified, your users are happier, you’re consulting costs decrease, and your time to roll out new Hyperion projects is dramatically reduced. Don’t miss this important session to learn how Pearson Education achieved excellence in performance management.
